Asia Cellular Satellite System (ACeS) Successfully Launched Garuda Satellite into the Orbit, Jasmine International Firmly Confident in the Project with Competitive Advantage of Handset and Airtime and Ready for Commercial Launch in Mid Year 2000
Asia Cellular Satellite System or “ACeS” successfully launched Garuda satellite on Saturday 12 February 2000 at 4.10 p.m. by Proton rocket-launcher from Kazakhstan, while the construction and installation of hardware and software for gateway in Thailand had already completed, ready for system testing to provide satellite-based mobile phone commercial service in mid year 2000. Jasmine International PCL which holds shares in ACeS through its subsidiary is firmly confident in the project’s efficiency and readiness competing in mobile phone satellite market, utilizing competitive edge of high quality mobile satellite service at inexpensive price. Price of ACeS/GSM handset which is compact and handheld designed is similar to GSM handsets and air time charge will be less than $ 1 per minute. ACeS project is expected to commence its service covering 23 countries across Asia Pacific region with over 3,000 million population.
The success of Garuda satellite launch for ACeS marked an important step showing its efficiency and stability of the Project. Considering ACeS’s lowest investment among other mobile phone satellite projects, Lockheed Martin – a manufacturer and technology developer from the United States, made a joint venture in the Project. While the growing mobile phone satellite market and economic recovery in Asia Pacific region will help ACeS to achieve its commercial services.
The ACeS System is owned by Bermuda-based ASIA Cellular Satellite (ACeS) International, with primary shareholders Lockheed Martin Global Telecommunications, Pasifik Satelit Nusantara, Jasmine International Overseas Company Ltd. and the Philippines Long Distance Telephone Company. ACeS project investment value totalling US$ 750 million.
