Mobile Satellite
Due
to their ability to cover service areas better than
conventional cellular systems, both domestically and
regionally, cellular satellite systems are now the focus
of service providers. Thus, ACeS Regional Services Co.,
Ltd was established to provide the Asia Cellular Satellite
System for Thailand and its neighbours.

As
this is a regional cellular satellite system, the company's
main function is to provide full duplex voice services to
public switched telephone networks as well as hand-held,
transportable and maritime terminals; two-way data and facsimile
traffic to hand-held and transportable terminals along with
marine radio via public land mobile networks or private
networks; and low-data-rate paging services to handheld
and mobile terminals using high frequencies.
The
company has international gateway facilities at the Jasmine
head office. Important investment components include a feeder-link
extended C-Band earth station, a network communication controller,
a network operation centre, and equipment to allow interconnection
with PSTN or gateway facilities.
In Indonesia, Jasmine
International Overseas has formed a joint-venture with PT Pasifik Satelit Nusantara of
Indonesia and Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company to set up PT Asia Cellular
Satellite Co., Ltd. PT Asia Cellular Satellite will launch and operate the Asia Cellular
Satellite System which will provide a satellite cellular service covering most of Asian
countries.
Paging
A well-known name in the
Philippines is JASpage. It is the commercial name for a popular radio paging service which
started in Metro Manila in February, 1997. It is provided by Island Country
Telecommunications Inc, a joint venture between Jasmine International Overseas Co Ltd,
Guoco Holdings (Philippines) Inc, and Italian Thai Development Plc.
The company was awarded licences by the
National Telecommunications Committee at the Philippines Ministry of Transportation and
Communication to construct and operate a paging service across this complex archipelago of
seven-thousand islands using satellites and Motorola's FLEX system gives the company an
advantage over competitors.
